The Backpack Program is a national initiative of Feeding America,
the Nation’s Food Bank Network. It is a partnership between the
Georgetown Ministerial Alliance and community volunteers to provide
a bag of food for the school to send home with children who appear
to be at risk of going hungry over a weekend or school holiday.
There are children in Georgetown
that rely on resources, such as free or reduced-priced school lunch
during the school week.
Our Georgetown Backpack Buddy
Program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children at times
when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school
vacations.
Currently we have 482 students at eight of the ten elementary
schools in the Georgetown ISD participating in our Backpack Buddy
program; Carver, Cooper, Frost, McCoy, Mitchell, Pickett, Purl and
Williams.
On a weekly basis we have 80 volunteers from eleven Georgetown
Churches working in various aspects of support.
We purchase food from the Capitol Area Food Back, HEB, Sam’s
and Costco and store this in the Backpack Buddy storeroom.
On Wednesdays, volunteers pick up food and take it to their
respective schools for kitting.
On Thursdays, the kitting operation is dividing up the food
and putting it into individual bags for the school to distribute to
the participating students on Fridays.
