The Backpack Buddies makes a huge difference in the quality of life for our children. When they leave my classroom on Friday, I know they will get at least 1 hot meal over the weekend because of the precious bag of food given to them. Hunger seems to be a well-kept secret in Georgetown, but it is here, and as the economy hits new lows, it becomes more prevalent.
It's heartbreaking to watch children leave on Friday, not knowing what their days at home will hold for them. Will they be treated with respect? Will they have to work to help out the family's finances? Will they be babysitters for the younger children? At least, with a bag of food going home, teachers know that the hardest-hit families are getting a reprieve.
We will never know the full impact this kind act accomplishes for the kids. From a teachers' perspective, it is conscious-easing, if nothing else. Thank you for doing this for my children!
We have seen an increase (about 7%) in Parent/Family involvement in school, which is huge!! I believe that when the families experience schools support they want to return the support so that would be attributed to the BackPack Buddy Program!!
I know that one of my little guys is very excited to receive his bag. He will ask about it! I think he/ his family is very appreciative based on his reaction.
